Sculpture by the Sea opening party at Swiss Grand Hotel Bondi

The award recipients for the 2011 Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi exhibition were announced last Friday at the opening party held at the Swiss Grand, Bondi Beach; and Walcha had a disproportionate presence on the podium. On Tuesday, the award judges reflected on their experience walking through the exhibition to select the award winners saying they were excited by the calibre of work. “We’ve loved the experience, it’s an amazing show. Hats off to the curatorial panel and to those responsible for the exhibition layout.

Sculpture by the Sea near Swiss Grand Hotel, Bondi is the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition. Now in it’s 15th year, the exhibition attracts approximately half a million people annually to see the works of over 100 Australian and international artists along the coastline on the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. The 2011 show closes on November 20.

New Year Celebrations on Bondi Beach 2011

"Shore Thing 2011 is set to hit Bondi Beach again this New Year’s Eve. Check out the first line-up announcement below. Since 2005, Shore Thing has been Sydney’s favourite New Year’s Eve party, taking over the most famous stretch of sand in the world, Bondi Beach, with the biggest names in music. From Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden to David Guetta last year, it’s an event making sure New Year’s Eve keeps its reputation as the ‘Party of the Year’.

But this year’s line-up ensures it will be remembered as the ‘Party of the Decade’, with the one and only ‘Doggfather of Rap’ – Snoop Dogg guaranteeing we end 2011 on a high note. Calvin Harris, arguably the world’s biggest DJ kickstarting 2012 in total party style, the always epic Pendulum live, and a heap of fireworks lighting up the ocean."

Sculpture by the Sea 1997-2011 - History

"The concept for Sculpture by the Sea was the culmination of many years thinking, where a new step in the thought process came up every year or so. Essentially the exhibition came from my wish to create a major free to the public arts event for Sydney.

Like so many other people I have always loved large community arts events like 'Opera in the Park' and 'Symphony Under the Stars', especially the way total strangers sit next to each other listening to music while enjoying a picnic dinner and a few glasses of wine. To me this sense of community is too rarely displayed or available in the modern world where there are few opportunities for seriously enjoyable cultural activities that are free and not fringe (but hey, long live fringe!).

Pretty much straight away I thought there was a need for an accessible visual arts event in Sydney but the 'what and where' took some time to nut out especially as I did not have a visual arts background."

Rugby League returns to Swiss Grand’s city Sydney

Finals Football. That time of year and the landscape of Rugby League is proving difficult to navigate again. It does seem that picking results for the next few games could be straightforward, especially when you consider that not since 1999 have the top 4 ranked teams all won their qualifying finals. However performances from some of the teams have left a lot of questions about who will be playing come October 2nd. Straight through were Manly and Melbourne, but their games were anything but straight forward... Read More

Enjoy the Coastal Walk from Swiss Grand Hotel Bondi Sydney

Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is the perfect thing to do for a romantic walk or to just be able to blend in with the locals getting a flavour of 4 beaches along the way.

Starting at
Swiss Grand Bondi this walk stretches for 6kms and takes around 2 hours for someone with reasonable fitness. It's well signposted walk guides you through spectacular views, beaches and plenty of spots to stop and catch food and drink. The walk starts from south of Bondi, past Bondi Icebergs Club. Walking further down you will reach Mackenzies Point. This is the point that gives you a panoramic view of North and South Bondi and if you look hard you will be able to see Maroubra Beach too in the distance. This is an aboriginal site too that has some engravings and carvings of a whale.

If you keep walking south and you enter a gradual downhill, and the very first beach that you'll come down to is called
Tamarama beach. Tamarama is a famous surf beach and this area has plenty of cafes around so you could stop to have a bite. Walking past Tamarama, you're up a gentle rise, over the crest and down into a beautiful beach called Bronte Beach. It's nowhere near as big as Bondi, but it's got a very large grassed area immediately behind it on the promenade and an ocean pool.

Further down you will cross
Waverley Cemetery built on probably the most expensive real estate around. Past the cemetery is Clovelly, a sheltered beach popular among families with children. Moving further down you will reach Gordons bay which is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving area. Finally if you walk down to Gordons Bay you'll come down into Coogee and Coogee Beach. From Coogee you can turn around and walk back if you like, or you can get a Bus 353 back to Swiss Grand Hotel, Bondi Beach.

Map and the details of the walk
